Home of The Saints

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College put out a solid team effort on Saturday afternoon to grab a 12-8 over visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Emmanuel College, the three-time defending men's lacrosse champions at Alumni Field.

The Mustangs scored seven straight goals between the second and third periods to break open a 3-3 game and seize control on their way to their third conference win of the year (9-4, 3-1 GNAC).

Da'zhon Johnston (Southampton, Bermuda) had three goals and an assist and Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.) added a hat trick of his own, while Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) made 13 saves.

For the Saints (5-8, 2-3 GNAC), Charlie Moran (Maitland, Fla.) had four goals and five points and Michael Sousa (Cranston, R.I.) won 14-21 face-offs. Emmanuel, however, managed just 1-11 with extra man opportunities.

Johnston gave Mount Ida their first lead at 2-1 with just fifty-one seconds left in the first quarter. Moran tied the game at three with his second of the game before Mount Ida's 7-0 run began. Coehlo scored all three of his goals during that spurt, and Jon Berry (Chichester, N.H.) also got his second of the game.

Emmanuel would cut the deficit to just four with four goals in the fourth quarter, including a goal and an assist by Sean Reilly (Deer Park, N.Y.), but two of those goals came in the final 1:40 of the game.

Berry had a game-high five ground balls for the Mustangs, to go with two goals and an assist, while Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.), Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.), and Wyatt Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) had a goal and an assist apiece for Munt Ida.

Tony Cibelli (Westboro, Mass.) and Donnie Litzelman (Stratham, N.H.) each had two points, and Brendan Gallagher (Solon, Ohio) had four caused turnovers in the losing effort.

Emmanuel junior Austin Rosenberg (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) made five saves in just over thirty minutes of action. He was relieved by Erik Jennings (South Berwick, Maine), who stopped three shots and allowed four goals.

Mount Ida starts the first of three road games on Tuesday evening with a huge GNAC contest in Providence against Johnson & Wales. Face-off is set for 7:00 pm.

Emmanuel hosts Rivier in Boston at the same time.
