Box Score
December 1, 2007 -The Emmanuel College women's basketball team
jumped out to a 12-0 lead and held off a furious Bowdoin rally to
defeat the Polar Bears in Brunswick, ME on Saturday, 72-68. This
was just Bowdoin's second loss at home since 2001. The Saints
picked up their first-ever victory in Brunswick and improved to 4-2
on the season.
Emmanuel exploded out of the gates thanks to a pair of early
three-pointers from senior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY)
to score the first 12 points of the game and take an early lead on
the host Polar Bears. Bowdoin played the Saints virtually even for
the remainder of the period, however, as a lay-in by Jill
Anelauskas trimmed the Emmanuel lead to eight points (34-26) late
in the half. A long-range trifecta from senior guard Leah Lipschitz
(Bayside, NY) just before the break gave the visitors a 37-26 edge
at halftime.
The Saints pushed the lead to 17 points immediately after the
half, and held a 50-33 edge following a jumper by senior forward Maura Mooney
(Essex Junction, VT) with 15:09 to go. The resilient Polar Bears
chipped away at the Emmanuel lead, cutting the advantage to seven
points (60-53) on an Anelauskas three-pointer with 6:29
remaining.
Jade Paez
keyed a quick 7-2 spurt that returned the lead to a dozen points,
67-55, with five minutes to go. But Bowdoin responded with a 9-0
surge that made it a three-point game, 67-64, on a pair of Alexa
Kaubris free-throws with 2:13 to play. The teams traded buckets
before a Bowdoin defensive stop resulted in another pair of
freebies for Kaubris, cutting the lead to 69-68 with under a minute
to play. A jumper in the lane by Mooney pushed the lead back to
three points before Kaubris missed the potential game-tying
three-pointer as Emmanuel clung to victory.
Lipschitz led Emmanuel with 19 points while Paez finished with
17. Sophomore guard Iman Davis (Toms
River, NJ) also finished in double-figures with 15 points and six
assists. Bowdoin was led by a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds
from Anelauskas with Kaubris connecting for 16 and 10 boards. Leah
Weiss had a dozen for the Polar Bears as well.
Bowdoin out-rebounded Emmanuel 43-33 and shot 43.3% for the game
to the Saints' 42.9%. The Polar Bears committed 26 turnovers to 17
for Emmanuel. The Saints will be back in action on Tuesday night
(12/4), when they take on MIT in a 6pm start in Cambridge, MA.
