Standish, ME - The Saints kicked off GNAC play with two wins on Saturday afternoon in Maine. Emmanuel knocked off Norwich University, 3-2, and followed up with a shutout of host Saint Joseph's College, 3-0. This was the opening weekend of Great Northeast Athletic Conference play, and the Saints traveled to Maine to take on the Cadets and the Monks in a GNAC tri-match.
Emmanuel defeated Norwich in the opening match. The Saints got down early, falling to the Cadets in the first two sets, 18-25 and 14-25. Emmanuel bounced back to win a nailbiter in the third set, 26-24. The Saints kept the momentum into the fourth and fifth sets winning, 25-15 and 15-10.
Emmanuel went on to defeat the host Monks in straight sets, 25-17, 25-16, 25-18. Senior captain Lindsey Parker (New Bedford, MA) led the Saints with 14 kills, 7 digs, and 3 service aces. Junior middle Nicole McAllister (Hampden, ME) added 7 kills, while rookie middle Rebecca Stanton (Quincy, MA) chipped in with five. Sophomore libero Megan Clary (Cumberland, RI) tallied 8 digs for the victors. Freshmen setters Kathryne Olsen (fairhaven, MA) and Cynthia Hernandez (South Dennis, MA) combined for 32 assists in the win.
With these wins, the Saints improved to 4-3 on the season and extend their win streak to three matches. Emmanuel will host Eastern Nazarene College in a non-conference match up on Tuesday night (9/16) at 7pm. This is the home opener for the Saints.
