BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore forward Amber Di Nucci (Assonet, Mass.) provided the game's only goal and senior keeper Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, N.H.) made nine saves to record the shutout as Emmanuel posted a 1-0 win over host Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-league contest played at Sweeney Field on Tuesday night.
A tightly contested first half saw the Saints hold a 10-5 shot advantage, however, both teams had the same amount of attempts on goal (four). The host Leopards had two scoring chances within a span of a minute, but Furtney made a pair of key saves. Emmanuel applied pressure and would have a corner kick late in the half, but could not convert.
Wentworth came out in the second half and hit the crossbar on its first possession. The Leopards would get three shots off in the second stanza before the Saints could muster their first. In the 80th minute, Emmanuel had three chances to score, but all three shots went wide of the net. With 7:03 remaining, sophomore Kristina Marik (Airmont, N.Y.) served a cross through the box where Di Nucci connected on her ninth shot of the night.
In the 85th minute, Wentworth had a chance to tie the game, but Furtney came up with another key save. The Leopards had one last shot in the final minute of play, but put a shot wide. Furtney made five of her nine saves in the second half to help Emmanuel improve to 2-0. Wentworth freshman Katherine Matthews (Northborough, Mass.) made six saves for the Leopards, which saw its record evened out at 1-1. The Saints held a 24-18 shot advantage.
Both teams play non-league games on Thursday. Emmanuel hosts Curry at 7:00 p.m., while at that same time, Wentworth hosts WPI.
