PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore forward Amber Di Nucci (Assonet, MA) scored two goals to lead the Saints to a 4-0 shutout of Johnson & Wales University in Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer opener. The Saints' win on the road improved the team to 3-3 on the season, while Johnson & Wales fell to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in GNAC play.
Di Nucci, who already has five goals this season, netted her first of the game at 39:42. She was assisted by junior midfielder Kate McKenna (Holyoke, MA). Emmanuel immediately struck again at 42:12, when sophomore midfielder Kristina Marik (Airmont, NY) knocked in a loose ball in front of the net. Marik's goal gave Emmanuel a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The Saints, who outshot the Wildcats 12-4 in the opening stanza, came out firing in the second half as well. Emmanuel netted the third goal of the game just two minutes into the half, when Di Nucci drilled one from fifteen yards back on the left side. McKenna converted a corner kick, assisted by Marik, at 53:31 to cap off the scoring for the game. Emmanuel wrapped up the game with a 23-9 shooting advantage, including a 15-3 shots on goal differential.
Senior goalie and last week's GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, NH) picked up her third win of the season, stopping all three Wildcat shots. The Saints will play again on Wednesday night, when they host GNAC and Colleges of the Fenway (COF) rival, Simmons College, at 7pm at the Winsor School.
