POLAR BEARS FREEZE SAINTS, 75-50

BOSTON, Mass. - The Bowdoin College Women's Basketball Team upended the Saints of Emmanuel College, 75-50, in Saturday's non-conference action played at the Jean Yawkey Center. Sophomore guard Katie Bergeron (Bradley, Maine) led three Bowdoin players scoring in double figures with 17 points in the win. With the victory, the Polar Bears improved to 11-3 on the season, while Emmanuel fell to 5-6.

The Polar Bears' defense was tough in the early going and held the Saints' scoreless for the opening seven minutes of play. Bowdoin mounted an 8-0 lead with 13:51 remaining in the first half. Bowdoin's early offense was a balanced attack, with four of the five starters dropping buckets in the opening minutes. Sophomore guard Kristin LeBel (Tolland, Conn.) ignited the Saints' offense at the 13-minute mark. LeBel hit three-straight field goals, tallying all seven of Emmanuel's points and cutting the Polar Bear lead to 12-7 with 10:38 to play. Over the next minute of play, Bowdoin went on an 8-2 run, stretching the margin to 20-9 with 9:34 to go in the half.

The Saints chipped away at Bowdoin's lead throughout the remainder of the half. Trailing 27-17 with 4:07 to go, Emmanuel went on a 9-1 run and nearly eliminated the deficit before the break. The Saints' freshman guard Karin Bird (Lee, Mass.) drained a lay-up with 30 seconds left to cut the Polar Bear lead to two points entering halftime, 28-26

Emmanuel's junior guard Iman Davis (Toms River, N.J.) hit two consecutive lay-ups to open the second half and gave the Saints' their first lead of the game at 30-28. The Polar Bears then surged out to a 10-0 run that spanned two and a half minutes and was capped with a 3-pointer by senior point guard Maria Noucas (Portsmouth, N.H.), putting Bowdoin back on top, 38-30. The Saints came back to within five points at the 15-minute mark, but could never put the play together at both ends of the court.

The Polar Bears ended the game on a 14-1 run. Emmanuel trailed, 61-49 with 6:13 to go and did not hit a field goal in the final six minutes of play. The Polar Bears out-rebounded the Saints, 50-40, and shot 45.5% (10-22) from beyond the arc.

Bergeron's 17 points led all scorers. The sophomore also dished out 6 assists and grabbed 4 boards in a 31-minute effort. Rookie guard Ellery Gould (East Sandwich, Mass.) provided a spark off the bench for Bowdoin with 13 points on 5 for 9 shooting. Freshman guard Jill Henrikson (Bath, Maine) chipped in with 11 points, while Noucas just missed a double-double with 9 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Davis notched a double-double for the Saints, scoring 14 points and hauling in a game-high 14 boards. LeBel was the high-scorer for Emmanuel with 15 points, including hitting two of two from three-point range. Freshman forward Liz Brooks (Charlton, Mass.) added 8 rebounds, 4 points, and 4 blocks in the effort.

The Saints will open up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Tuesday night, as Emmanuel hosts the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College in a 5:30pm start. Bowdoin will travel to Clark University on Monday night for a 7pm start.
