NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior defender Meghan Long (Smithfield, R.I.) sent a free kick into the back of the net early in the first half, lifting the visiting Saints past Albertus Magnus College in women's soccer action played in Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon. Long's goal was the only score of the day for either team, as the Saints edged the Falcons, 1-0, earning their fifth shut-out of the season. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win boosted Emmanuel to 11-5-1 on the season and 8-2-1 in conference play. The host Falcons dropped to 8-5-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the GNAC. The Saints remain in second place in the conference standings, while Albertus Magnus fell to the sixth slot.
Despite being out-shot, 15-5, the Saints were able to come away with the win. Long found the scoreboard at 23:42, giving Emmanuel a 1-0 advantage, which the Saints held throughout the contest. The Falcons had 6 corner kick opportunities versus 4 by the Saints. The fouls were evenly matched for the game, with Emmanuel receiving 11 whistles and Albertus Magnus 10.
Freshman goalkeeper Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.) made several tremendous saves in the match. D'Ottavio stopped all 10 of the Falcons' shots on goal, collecting the fifth shut-out of her rookie season. Christina Oddo made 2 saves in the losing effort for Albertus Magnus.
The Saints have one regular season game remaining. Emmanuel will host top-ranked Saint Joseph's College (Maine) at Roberto Clemente Field on Saturday at 3pm. This game will be the nightcap of a men's and women's soccer double-header. The six seniors on the Saints squad will be honored prior to the start of the game.
