BOSTON, Mass. - Emmanuel College took care of visiting Johnson & Wales University, 3-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action played at Roberto Clemente Field on Tuesday night. The Saints got two goals and an assist from senior captain Kate McKenna (Holyoke, Mass.), which paved the way for Emmanuel's first conference win of the season. With the victory, the Saints improve to 3-2 (1-1 GNAC), while the Wildcats drop to 3-1 (1-1 GNAC).
Emmanuel scored quickly, notching the first goal in just the fourth minute of play. Freshman forward Elizabeth Blasser (Pembroke, Mass.) scored with an assist from McKenna at 3:48 to kick things off for the Saints. McKenna tacked on the second goal for the Saints, which proved to be the game-winner, at 41:54. She was assisted by junior forward Amber Di Nucci (Assonet, Mass.) and Emmanuel took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Saints scored again out of the break, when McKenna notched her second of a pair of goals on the night. This time she was assisted by rookie forward Meghan Zerba (Cumberland, R.I), with the goal coming at 57:10.
The Wildcats made an effort to rally late and found the scoreboard in the 68th minute. Johnson & Wales junior forward Angela Cazzato (Rensselear, N.Y.) scored with an assist from sophomore midfielder Stephania Cubelli (Norwood, Mass.) at 67:23. Cazzato's goal was the first that Emmanuel has allowed in the past four meetings between these two programs.
The Saints out-shot the Wildcats, 13-8, and took 4 corner kicks to just 1 by the visitors. Emmanuel's freshman keeper Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.) made 2 saves, picking up her third win of the season in net for the Saints. For JWU, junior keeper Jennifer Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) made 6 saves in the 90-minute effort for the Wildcats.
The Saints will be back in action on Thursday, when they host the Beavers of Babson College in a non-conference match-up beginning at 7pm. JWU will play again on Monday afternoon, when the Wildcats host Framingham State College in a 3:30pm start.
