New Haven, Conn. - The Emmanuel Women's Soccer Team rebounded from Saturday's loss to upset Albertus Magnus College, 2-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match played in New Haven, Connecticut on Monday afternoon. The host Falcons outshot the visiting Saints, 19-8, but Emmanuel capitalized and came away with the one-goal win. The Saints are now 6-9 on the season and 4-5 in league play. The loss drops AMC to 9-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
Emmanuel scored first in the contest with sophomore forward Meghan Zerba's (Cumberland, R.I.) through-ball finish to give Emmanuel the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of play. The Falcons were the victims of bad luck in the 23rd minute when senior forward Samantha Gigliotti (Wolcott, Conn.) blasted a shot off the crossbar over Emmanuel keeper Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.)
The Saints found the back of the net once again in the 33rd minute on senior midfielder Amber Di Nucci's (New Bedford, Mass.) goal, which gave Emmanuel a 2-0 lead. Freshman Darcey Sullivan (Dalton, Mass.) recorded assists on both the of Saints' goals in the game. Gigliotti would be denied by D'Ottavio, when she blasted a shot at point blank range that was smothered for the save. Emmanuel went on to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Albertus stormed into the second half with renewed focus, as sophomore forward Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) netted a ball in the 52nd minute on a terrific pass from freshman midfielder Meghan Loughman (Trumbull, Conn.) to bring the score to 2-1, in favor of Emmanuel.
The Falcons continued to get scoring opportunities late in the second half when Figueroa's shot hit the cross bar to deny Albertus a goal. The Falcons outshot their opponents 11-1 in the second frame, but could not finish. D'Ottavio was outstanding in goal, making 10 saves for the Saints, while senior goalkeeper Christina Oddo (East Haven, Conn.) made five saves for Albertus.
Albertus Magnus hosts Trinity College on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 pm. Emmanuel will play on Saturday (10/16) at Mount Ida College in a 2pm start.
