WILDCATS SHUT DOWN SAINTS IN GNAC OPENER

East Providence, R.I. - The Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team opened the 2010 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) season with a 2-0 victory against the pre-season favorite Emmanuel College Saints at Pierce Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The two teams battled through the first half knotted in a scoreless tie with both teams managing four shots in the stanza. The Wildcats netted to goals in the second frame and continued to hold Emmanuel scoreless, coming away with the 2-0 win. The loss dropped the Saints to 2-4 on the season, while JWU improved to 2-3 overall.

Just over two minutes into the second half, Johnson & Wales junior Samantha Reynolds (Plymouth, Mass.) put in a pass from classmate Berkeley Cecchini-Bond (Uncasville, Conn.) to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead at the 47:12 mark. Cecchini-Bond then blasted in a free kick from over 20 yards out at 56:50 to give the Wildcats the 2-0 lead. JWU would hold on for the 2-0 victory.

Senior Jennifer Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) made four saves to record the shutout victory for Johnson & Wales, while sophomore Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.) had three stops in the setback for Emmanuel.

The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, September 16th, when they travel to Framingham State for a non-conference contest starting at 4:00 p.m. Emmanuel will play again on Wednesday night, September 15th, when the Saints host Emerson College in a 7pm start.
