Box Score
BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Garvey's
(Warwick, R.I.) second goal of the night, coming with 2:24
remaining in overtime lifted the Emmanuel Women's Soccer Team to a
2-1 win over Wentworth in a non-conference contest played on
Sweeney Field. The game marked the fifth consecutive game between
the two schools that has been decided by a single goal.
Despite being outshot 12-8 in the first half, the host Leopards
made the most of their attempts, putting seven shots on goal and
taking a 1-0 lead at 44:59. Freshman forward Maddy Lanoue
(Pittsfield, Mass.) took a pass from classmate Olivia Moore (Salem,
Conn.) and fired a shot to the upper middle of the net. The goal
came with seven tenths of a second left in the half.
The lead held up until the 59:29 mark when junior midfielder Brittany
Ridge (Portland, Maine) fed a pass to Garvey. Garvey fired a
shot that found the upper left corner of the net, evening the score
at a goal apiece.
Both teams had chances over the final 30-plus minutes, but
Wentworth junior Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Emmanuel
junior Jessica
D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.) helped to keep the score tied. With
20 seconds left in regulation, the Leopards had a chance to pull
ahead, but a shot attempt sailed to the left.
In the extra period the hosts had a golden opportunity to claim
the victory, but a header off of a corner kick in the 96th minute
went wide of the goal. The Saints ended the game when freshman
forward Amanda
Roberts (Hudson, N.H.) took a shot that Gardner initially
saved. However, the rebound came out to Garvey, who buried the shot
inside the right post, for her 9th goal and 5th game-winner of the
season.
D'Ottavio made six saves on the night, while Gardner tallied 11.
The Saints outshot the Leopards by a 29-17 margin.
Winners of two straight, Emmanuel (6-1) returns to Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Wednesday when the
Saints travel to St. Joseph College in West Hartford, Connecticut.
Wentworth falls to 2-5 and resumes Commonwealth Coast Conference
(CCC) play on Saturday at Nichols.
