BANGOR, Me. - The Emmanuel College Men's Soccer Team battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Maine Maritime Academy in the opening game of the Husson Classic, played at Boucher Field on the campus of Husson University. The season opener for both teams featured the Mariners out-shooting the Saints, 19-11, but Emmanuel maintaining the tempo throughout the 110 minutes of action.
Despite the lack of scoring, there was no shortage of action, as both squads battled hard until the final horn. Emmanuel Head Coach Colin Goin praised the solid play of his defense, noting the efforts of rookies Pawel Samolewicz (Chicopee, Mass.) and Jon Stevens (Derby, Conn.), as well as veterans Kevin Esposito (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and Kelly Louis-Charles (Orange, Conn.). Emmanuel's freshman keeper Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) turned in a 14-save shutout in his collegiate debut.
Six of the Saints' 11 total shots were fired on goal. However, Maine Maritime keeper William Lacour (Charlottesville, VA) was able to stifle all six attempts. An unlucky bounce ended a great scoring opportunity by senior captain Ivan Barrera (Bogota, Columbia) in the first half. Fellow captain Mathew Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) led the Saints' attack, tallying two of Emmanuel's six shots on goal.
"I'm very happy with our effort today. Coming out of our first game without giving up a goal is a great start to the season for us," commented the Saints' third-year head coach.
Both, the Saints and the Mariners will return to action tomorrow in the second day of the tournament. Maine Maritime will face off against the University of New England at 2:30 pm. Emmanuel will take on host Husson University in the late game, scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm.
