WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PICKS UP FIRST WIN AT WHEATON INVITATIONAL

NORTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College women's volleyball posted a 1-3 record this weekend at the Wheaton College Volleyball Invitational. The Saints dropped decisions to the host Lyons as well as SUNY Plattsburgh and Maine Maritime before closing the weekend with a victory over Salem State University. EC now stands at 1-8 on the year and returns to action on Tuesday, September 13 for their home opener against Keene State College at 7:00 PM in the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium.

WHEATON COLLEGE match – 3-2 loss (14-25, 27-25, 25-23, 19-25, 9-15)

Despite holding a 2-1 set lead, the Saints couldn't muster a third win and fell in five, 3-2. Sophomore Mary Shelow (Miami, Fla.) paced EC with a team-best 12 kills while freshman Marissa Cataldo (Melrose, Mass.) recorded nine kills and 13 digs. Senior defensive specialist Sarah Schemerhorn (Los Angeles, Calif.) picked up a game-high 23 digs. Rookie setter Samantha DeMarco (Rockland, Mass.) dished out 19 assists while sophomore setter Carly Church (Higganum, Conn.) added 16 helpers.

SUNY PLATTSBURGH match – 3-1 loss (27-25, 21-25, 22-25, 18-25)

The Saints opened the match taking the first set 27-25 but ultimately fell in the next three stanzas to drop the match, 3-1. Shelow led the way again with a team-high 10 kills while senior outside hitter Cassie Chruscielski (Duluth, Minn.) tallied eight kills. Schemerhorn got down for 22 digs while sophomores Katharine Journeay (Hampton, N.H.) and Casey Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) were also in double-figures for digs with 15 and 14, respectively.  DeMarco passed out 19 helpers for the second consecutive match.

MAINE MARITIME match – 3-1 loss (21-25, 13-25, 25-23, 24-26)

After winning the third set to make it a 2-1 match, Emmanuel had a match point at 24-23 in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth frame but Maine Maritime rallied to score the final three points of the stanza to pick up a 26-24 set win and the match, 3-1. Shelow slammed home a team-best 12 kills while Schemerhorn collected 15 digs. Church led the team with 13 assists while DeMarco chipped in with 12.

SALEM STATE match – 3-0 win (25-17, 25-11, 25-21)

Emmanuel put together three solid sets to win its first match of the season over the Vikings behind a balanced offensive and defensive front. 11 different players registered kills led by seven winners from Shelow. Schemerhorn posted 17 digs while DeMarco passed out 10 assists to help EC post the "W"
