THE LEAD:  Mount Ida College topped Emmanuel College in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (25-11, 19-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12), Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's volleyball action at the Andy Yosinoff Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Mount Ida dominated the opening set, hitting .310 as a team en route to a 25-11 win.
  • The Saints answered with a strong second set to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 win, forcing the Mustangs into 10 hitting errors while only making two on their side of the net.
  • Ida bounced back and took a close third frame by a 25-23 score despite a late run by the Saints.
  • Emmanuel trailed 19-14 in the fourth set before going on an 11-2 run to close the frame with a 25-21 win to force the decisive fifth set.
  • In the final frame, Emmanuel led 12-8 before the Mustangs rattled off seven consecutive points to win the match with a 15-12 fifth set score.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • EC junior Mary Shelow (Miami, Fla.) led all players with 20 kills
  • Ida senior Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) posted a team-high 19 kills to go along with 15 digs while freshman outside hitter Rachael Colombo (Wallkill, N.Y.) recorded 14 kills and 17 digs. Junior Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) also posted a double-double with 18 digs and 10 kills.
  • Emmanuel junior libero Katharine Journeay (Hampton, N.H.) tallied a game-high 26 digs.
  • Emmanuel junior Carly Church (Higganum, Conn.) collected 38 assists and in the first set dished out her 1,000th career helper to become just the fifth player in program history to join the Grand Club for assists.
  • Mount Ida sophomore setter Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) passed out a career-high 50 helpers in the win.
  • The Ida victory snaps a seven-match winning streak for the Saints over the Mustangs as Emmanuel is now 17-3 all-time vs. Mount Ida.

WHAT'S NEXT?

  • The Saints return to action later today when they play host to Dean College at 4:30 PM.
  • Mount Ida is set to take on Dean at 2:45 PM in the middle match of the tri-match at Emmanuel.
