THE LEAD – Emmanuel College picked up its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the 2022 campaign on Saturday afternoon, topping Albertus Magnus College by a 3-1 final before falling to Colby-Sawyer College in the second tilt of a GNAC tri-match in New Haven, Conn., 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Albertus Magnus)

  • EC dropped the opening set of the day to the Falcons, 25-22, before regrouping to win the next three to take the opening match against the hosts, 3-1.
  • Albertus led early on in set two, taking an 8-5 lead before the momentum shifted thanks to a 6-0 run behind the service game of senior Rachel Coleman (Peabody, Mass.) to go ahead for good in the set.
  • It was a similar tune in the third set as AMC raced out to a 10-6 lead before Coleman and the Saints rattled off seven consecutive points to build a 13-10 lead, not losing advantage en rout to a 25-16 win.
  • The Saints cruised in the third set, leading by as many as 10 points, multiple times, to take the frame 25-17 for the GNAC victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Seana Phillips (Middleboro, Mass.) and Wiktoria Galazyn (Plainville, Mass.) paced the Saints with 10 kills each while Jaiden Greaves (Wells, Maine) finished with nine kills.
  • Coleman registered a double-double with 30 assists and 13 digs.
  • Senior Tatiana Correia (Peabody, Mass.) posted a team-high 14 digs.
  • Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) powered the Falcons with a match-high 13 kills while Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) got down for a match-high 18 digs in the loss.
  • EC combined to hit .189 as a team in the win, their second-highest team hitting percentage this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Colby-Sawyer)

  • EC raced out to a 17-7 lead in the first set but could not hold it together as the Colby-Sawyer closed the set on a 15-5 flurry to take the opening stanza, 25-23.
  • The collapse gutted the Saints as CSC controlled the pace in set two, leading the entire time to go on for a 25-13 win.
  • Emmanuel opened the third set scoring five straight points, riding the early lead to a 25-23 win to force a fourth set.
  • The Chargers thwarted any chance of a comeback, taking care of business in the fourth to take the match 3-1 with a 25-13 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Senior Kerry Shea (Tewksbury, Mass.) recorded a team-high 11 kills while Phillips pitched in with nine winners.
  • Coleman dished out 21 assists and Correia registered 13 digs.
  • Mia Harmon (Concord, N.H.) and Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) led the Chargers with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.
  • Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.) ran the offense with 33 assists.
  • CSC hit .311 as a team while holding Emmanuel to a .071 clip.

UP NEXT

  • The Saints have a quick turnaround, returning to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 4 when they host Bridgewater State at 7:00 PM.
  • Albertus Magnus and Colby-Sawyer are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The Falcons head to MCLA for a non-conference match at 6:30 PM while the Chargers host Lasell University in another GNAC affair at 7:00 PM.
