SALEM, Mass. -- Emmanuel defeated Salem State in straight sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-19) in non-conference women's volleyball action at Twohig Gymnasium on Saturday. The Saints improve to 14-5 on the year while the Vikings slide to 2-16.
How it Happened:
- Presley Shairs registered six first set kills, but a balanced attack by Emmanuel produced a 25-23 opening set win. The two teams were tied 14 times in the tightly contested set, as they continuously exchanged points. Trailing, 23-21 a kill by Shairs and an ace by Eva Haralabatos knotted the game at 23-23. However, a kill by Letitia Bossou and an ace by Frances Ramos Rodriguez put Emmanuel on top for good.
- The Saints led 10-6 early before a 6-1 run gave Emmanuel a 16-7 lead following an attack error by Salem State. Back-to-back kills by Isabella Marquez gave the Saints a 22-15 advantage as they finished the set with a six-point victory.
- Bossou added five kills in the final set to help Emmanuel complete the sweep. The Saints opened set three on a 5-1 run and built a comfortable 17-9 lead after an ace by Kason Huynh. The Vikings cut into the deficit after a kill by Shairs made the score 21-15, but Emmanuel, which hit .333% for the set, closed the match with their 10th kill of the set provided by Gabrielle Hardy.
Inside the Numbers:
- Bossou led Emmanuel with 12 kills while Marquez had eight kills and eight digs.
- Huynh finished with 29 assists for the Saints to go with nine digs.
- Shairs tallied a match-high 17 kills for Salem State.
- Barrows led the defensive effort with 15 digs.
- Eva Haralabatos and Celia Carbone combined for 23 assists.
