Women's Soccer Earns Historic Win, Claim 2-1 Victory Over Connecticut College

BOSTON – Emmanuel women's soccer picked up a historic win on Thursday night, defeating a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) program for the first time in team history after a 2-1 victory over the Connecticut College Camels, in non-conference play on Clemente Field.

The victory moves the Saints to 9-1-1 as their history of playing NESCAC teams dates back to 2007. Connecticut College drops to 4-5-0 after losing their first non-conference match of the season.

The opening 30 minutes produced very few opportunities for both sides, as the Saints and Camels fought for momentum and offensive chances. It wasn't until the 30th minute that Connecticut College broke through first, giving the Camels a 1-0 lead.

A Camels free kick was sent into the Saints penalty area as Emmanuel failed to clear a loose ball in a high-danger area. One shot of the loose ball was fired off the right post, as the rebound continued to bounce uncontrolled. Camels senior Clare Mulvihill benefitted from the final missed clearance, firing a right-footed shot from the penalty spot into a wide-open net, giving Connecticut College a one-goal lead.

The Saints responded quickly, pressing the Camels defense into the turning point of the night, as Saints junior Sarah Dullaghan broke in behind the defense. Trying to chase her down, Camels sophomore Una McCorry made a desperation tackle, fouling Dullaghan at the top of the penalty area, resulting in a sending-off for the Camels defender in the 36th minute.

The Camels held the Saints off the board until the 57th minute as Dullaghan squared the match at 1-1. Sophomore Ciara Horan crossed a perfect pass from the left wing, finding an open Dullaghan, who headed a shot over the Camels goalie to tie the match.

Emmanuel took their 2-1 lead in the 68th minute with Dullaghan scoring her second of the night, holding up as the game-winner. Junior Alexandra Gencarelli passed a long ball over the top of the Camels defense as Dullaghan outhustled the defenders, sliding a shot into the left side netting, for the 2-1 advantage.

The 10-women Camels managed one final opportunity in the 83rd minute with senior Sarah Hobbs firing a shot at goal, but her attempt was blocked away by the Saints, as the home side used the one-player advantage to earn a 2-1 win.

Dullaghan's brace gives her 17 goals this season and 51 for her career, as she becomes just the third player in program history to reach the 50-goal plateau, joining Vickie Shalian '01 and Amber Di Nucci '11 as the only others to accomplish the feat.

Horan and Gencarelli each picked up their second assist of the year while junior goalie Gaby Baker played 54 minutes in a substitute appearance, earning the victory and improving to 3-0-1.

Mulvihill netted her second of the season while senior goalie Ella Kahrl made four saves in the loss, falling to 4-5-0 this year.

The Saints return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 12:00 p.m., hosting Johnson & Wales for a rematch of the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship on Family Weekend. The Camels also face Johnson & Wales in their next outing, traveling to the Wildcats on Monday, Oct. 7, for a 5:00 p.m. match.
