BOSTON – Emmanuel women's volleyball had their 2024 season come to an end on Tuesday night, suffering a 3-1 loss (25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22) to the No. 4 seed Simmons Sharks in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinals from the Holmes Sports Center.
The Saints earned the No. 5 seed with their impressive regular season, but drop to 21-8 in their winningest season in a decade. The Sharks improve to 15-13 and advance into the GNAC Semifinals, where they'll take on the top-seeded Lasell Lasers on Thursday night.
In the opening set, the Sharks used a series of small runs to build their lead through the first. A pair of 4-0 runs in the early and middle portions of the set had Simmons out to a 12-7 lead. Later in the set, it was another run of four points for Simmons that put them out ahead for good at 18-10. Emmanuel closed to within three, but time ran out for the Saints as a kill by
Zoe Chatterton finished the set, in favor of Simmons, 25-20.
In the second set, neither side could take control through the middle portion of the set, as the largest lead of the stanza stood at three until a 16-16 tie. Just like the opening set, it was another 4-0 spurt for the Sharks that launched them ahead. Simmons held off any late run as back-to-back kills for
Hannah Pridgeon ended the set 25-19.
The Saints flashed in the third despite an early deficit. Emmanuel trailed 12-6 in the third set before their best run of play, going on a 15-4 run to overtake Simmons and lead 21-15. Despite the run, the Saints only managed three kills over those 15 points, while four assisted blocks led the charge in the comeback. The Saints needed six attempts at set point to get past the Sharks, but first-year
Amber Hong came through with a kill to give the third set to the Saints, 25-20.
In the fourth and final frame, the action played out similar to that of the second set, with neither side jumping out to a big lead, up to a 17-17 tie. Just like the previous two sets the Sharks won, it was another 4-0 spurt at the right time that would ultimately help end the Saints season. Emmanuel pulled back to within a point but the Sharks would again hold off any thought of a comeback as Chatterton finished off the match with a kill for a fourth set win, 25-22.
Chatterton finished the match with a team-high 19 kills to go along with 13 digs. Pridgeon added a dozen kills and digs to match Chatterton's double-double.
Alicia Beatty led all players with five service aces.
