Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Overtime Loss in GNAC Semifinals at St. Joseph (Conn.)

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Emmanuel men's soccer season ended on Wednesday night at the University of Saint Joseph, as a penalty kick goal in overtime from Blue Jays graduate Henry McGrath V, was the only tally of the night, in USJ's golden goal, 1-0 win over the Emmanuel Saints in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Semifinals.

The Blue Jays improve to 13-4-3 with the win and ride a six-match winning streak in the GNAC Championship game. The Saints season ends at 10-6-3 and marks only the second time in program history the Saints reached at least 10 wins in a season.

The penalty kick decision came with under a minute in the first overtime session. USJ senior Dane Stephens drove toward the Emmanuel goal line and was fouled inside the penalty area, giving McGrath V a chance from the spot. The grad midfield shot into the low left corner, away from the dive of Saints goalie Maddox Pierce to find the back of the net.

Prior to the overtime, the Saints best chance of the night came in the 87th minute, with first-year Aaron Picker missing just over the crossbar from in close, which kept the match scoreless.

In the first half, the Blue Jays had their best opportunity before the overtime game-winner in the 23rd minute with junior Eduardo Chavez-Baez finding space near the top of the penalty area. His shot looked set for the side netting, but a diving parry by Maddox kept USJ off the board.

McGrath V's goal is his 12th of the season, second-most in the GNAC. Blue Jays goalie Will Slayton made five stops in the shutout win. Pierce made three stops for the Saints in defeat.

The top-seeded Blue Jays will host the GNAC Championship Match on Saturday, Nov. 9, hosting the No. 3 seeded Johnson & Wales Wildcats, after JWU picked up a 3-2 win over Albertus Magnus in double overtime.
