BOSTON – After a 10-day layoff from play, Emmanuel women's basketball returned to action on Tuesday night, falling in non-conference play to the Tufts Jumbos, 70-52, on Yosinoff Court.
The Jumbos improved to 5-2 with the win and are now 2-0 on the road this season. The Saints drop to 3-3 in their first game since Nov. 23.
Tufts took control from the opening tip, starting the game on a 14-2 run in a span of 4:45, quickly leading by a dozen. Senior
Sofia Gonzalez started the run with a three-point make and ended the run with a three-pointer, scoring six of the Jumbos 14 points to open the quarter.
Six straight points by Saints sophomore
Kaitlyn Bartash cut the deficit back down to six. Her three consecutive layups in a 1:12 span pulled the Saints back to 14-8. The quarter would finish with a pair of foul shots made for Tufts, giving them a 20-12 lead through a quarter.
A low-scoring second quarter saw the Jumbos outscore the Saints 12-7 with Tufts maintaining a double-digit lead for much of the frame. The visitors shot 30 percent while the Saints were held to 27.8 percent shooting, as Tufts led at the break, 32-19.
In the second half, the Jumbos led by as many as 22 early in the fourth quarter. Emmanuel managed to close within 12, but Tufts ended the Saints momentum with a game-ending 9-3 run, on the way to a 70-52 win.
Gonzalez led the way with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 3-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Junior
Sarah Crossett added nine points in 18 minutes.
Bartash finished with 10 points, shooting 4-for-6 on the night. Junior
Tiffany Fischer came off the bench to score 10 points in seven minutes, going a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point land.
The Saints return to play on Saturday, Dec. 7 with a trip to Westfield State for a noon tip-off. The Jumbos head to MIT on Thursday, Dec. 5, for a 7:00 p.m. game.
