Men's Soccer Earns 1-0 Saturday GNAC Win at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- After opening their season with a three-game road trip, the Norwich Men's Soccer team played their home opener against Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon, falling to the visitors 1-0. The Cadets remained winless on the season (0-4, 0-3 GNAC) while the Saints improved to 3-2 (2-0 GNAC)

It was a back-and-forth struggle throughout the first half with both sides generating opportunities. Eight and a half minutes in, Kirk Rodgers (Lebanon, Ohio) made his first stop of the game. A few minutes later, Kyle Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev.) had an opportunity that sailed wide.

As the half rolled on, the Saints had several chances that were nullified by the Norwich back line but would eventually breakthrough in the 32nd minute with senior Joey Soucy (Attleboro, Mass.) scoring his first of the season from 12 yards out. Before the end of the half, Dillon Hamrell (Williston, Vt.) and Christian Grubic (Montvale, N.J.) had chances, but could not find the equalizer in an evenly played half with Emmanuel holding a slight 5-4 shot advantage.

After an early Norwich corner to open the second half, the Saints pressed the offense looking to extend their lead, but Rodgers and the rest of the back end did not break. Late in the half, the Cadets had numerous opportunities including close calls off an opportunistic free kick, and a close call off a late corner, however the Saints would hold on despite the late charge.

Norwich will remain on their home turf, as they will play host to Regis Friday Sept. 20 at 7 PM on Homecoming weekend. The Saints head to Regis College on Wednesday, Sept. 18, for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
