NASHUA, NH - The Saints battled Rivier University to a 1-1 draw through regulation and overtime on Saturday afternoon, leaving the game to be decided on penalty kicks, with Emmanuel ultimately losing 2-4 in Pks in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) quarterfinals match.
It was a physical contest right out of the gate and neither side could get many opportunities. The Raiders struck first in the 19th minute with Kamar Matthew-Murray getting the scoring underway and giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead that would survive the entirety of the first half.
In the second half, Emmanuel wasted little time, as a steal in the Raiders end by sophomore Rafael Matamoros led to a quick equalizer from first-year forward Lucas Siliva at the 57:36 mark. The Saints continued to put the pressure on Rivier, getting a golden opportunity in the 67th minute on a tap by first-year defenseman Jaylen Goodall but diving save by Raiders' keeper Logan Clough kept the score even.
The intensity continued to rise later in the second half, as first-year Saints keeper Owen Silva made a number of crucial saves, including one on a breakaway in the final seconds of regulation, sending this GNAC quarterfinal match into overtime.
The both overtime periods were dominated by the Raiders, as the Saints spent most of the time defending their own zone, but managed to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
In PK's, Emmanuel fell down 2-0 after Emmanuel missed its first opportunity. Senior Joe Anderson found the top left corner to get the Saints on the board, 2-1 and with the season on the line, Silva made a huge diving save to keep the squad alive. It ultimately proved to not be enough, as the Raiders would make a third PK and the Saints would miss their third opportunity. Jacob Beck scored on Emmanuel's fourth attempt, cutting the deficit to 2-3, but Luiggi Ferrerira would knock in Rivier's fourth attempt and end the Saints season in the GNAC Quarterfinals.
