BOSTON – Emmanuel women's basketball broke away in the second quarter, outscoring the Elms Blazers 21-5 in the frame, on the way to their 71-44 victory on Monday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action from
Andy Yosinoff Court.
The Saints move back above .500, improving to 11-10 (6-4 GNAC) with wins in six of their last seven outings. Elms drops to 7-14 (4-6 GNAC) in the loss.
With a 22-15 lead heading to the second quarter, the Saints and Blazers traded baskets in the opening minute before Emmanuel embarked on a 15-0 run over a span of 3:12 to boost their lead to 22. The Saints held the Blazers to 2-for-12 shooting from the
field, as the home side finished the second quarter with a 43-20 lead.
The Saints held their largest lead of the night in the third, using a 10-0 run spanning 3:17 to lead by 31. Elms never managed to make a charge, only getting as close as 24 points in the fourth quarter, leading to Emmanuel's 71-44 win on Monday night.
For the second time in the last five games, no Saints player scored more than nine points. The trio of senior
Desiree Robinson, sophomore
Kaitlyn Bartash, and first-year
Jordan Whitehead all finished with nine points. Bartash added six steals and six blocks in the win. Senior
Olivia Matela stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Blazers grad student
Rahmia Johnston led all scorers with 14 points to go along with seven boards and four assists. Junior
Talia Uribe added seven points for Elms while first-year
Mary Turco finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Saints occupy the seventh spot in the GNAC Playoff table following the win and are back in action against Saint Joseph's College on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. on Yosinoff Court. The Blazers also return Wednesday, traveling to Regis for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
