NASHUA, N.H. – For the first time in 23 tries, Emmanuel men's volleyball traveled to Rivier University and came out of Muldoon Arena with a victory, claiming a 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 13-25, 16-25, 15-12) road win on Tuesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
The victory marks the Saints' first-ever win at Rivier as Emmanuel moves to 7-6 (2-2 GNAC) with the win. Rivier falls to 4-5 (1-2 GNAC) in Wednesday's defeat.
The Saints looked poised for a straight sets win, taking the first two sets of the night, but Rivier fought back with strong performances in the third and fourth sets to force a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth, a pair of 3-0 runs for Emmanuel helped build a small lead of 8-6. But a matching three-point stretch for the Raiders put them in front 9-8. After back-to-back Saints kills by junior
Michael Shelley and senior
Jyles Amirault, the Saints led 10-9 and wouldn't surrender the lead again.
After a Saints service error tied the fifth set at 10-10, Emmanuel scored three straight points, thanks to a pair of kills by Shelley and a solo block by sophomore
Quincy Moore. Rivier closed to within one, but another Shelley kill set up match point. Rivier committed one final attack error as the Saints took the fifth set, 15-12.
In the opening two sets, the Saints offense was nearly unstoppable, collecting 29 kills on 56 attempts with just four errors for a stellar .446 hitting percentage in the first two sets.
The Saints offense fell off in the third and fourth while the Raiders fought back with a combined 23 kills on 45 attempts to go with five errors over that stretch, hitting at .400 in the third and fourth combined.
Shelley finished with a match-high 18 kills to go with seven digs while hitting .324 from the floor. Amirault added a dozen kills in the win while junior
Trey Guest finished with 10 kills. Moore finished with a career-high 47 assists, nearly doubling his previous career-high of 24 assists in a single match.
Raiders sophomore
Racine Camara finished with a team-best 17 kills while hitting .455 on the night. First-year
Cody Fitzpatrick added 12 kills and nine digs while sophomore
Justin Barish had 41 assists.
The Saints return home for a Thursday, Feb. 13, match in the GNAC, hosting Emerson at 7:00 p.m. The Raiders welcome No. 18 Lasell to Muldoon Arena on Friday, Feb. 14, for a 7:00 p.m. Valentine's Day meeting.
