Men's Basketball Falls to Saint Joseph's College, 92-80 in GNAC Action

BOSTON – Opening the second half with a 14-0 run, the Saint Joseph's College Monks turned a halftime deficit into a 92-80 victory over the Emmanuel Saints on Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Yosinoff Court.

The loss drops the Saints to 4-18 (3-8 GNAC) and puts them a game back of the final playoff spot in the GNAC standings. The victory moves SJC to 18-4 (10-1 GNAC) and increases their winning streak to 12 games while keeping them at the top of the GNAC standings.

The Saints led by one at the break before the Monks rattled off an 18-2 run in the opening 5:30 of the second half to take control of Wednesday's conference bout. Monks junior Wani Donato and sophomore Remijo Wani were the stars of the run, combining for 15 of the 18 Saint Joseph's points to start the second.

Wani and Donato traded baskets for the first four points in the run, giving the Monks a three-point edge. Following a three-pointer by John Paul Frazier and a Donato layup, Wani scored five consecutive points thanks to a pair of free throws and a three-point field goal, boosting the Monks lead to 62-49.

The 18-2 run concluded with four points by Donato, capping the scoring surge with a fast break layup to give SJC their largest lead of the night at 66-51.

Emmanuel made a push to get back into the game, responding to the 18-2 Monks start with an 11-3 run of their own, spanning 2:40 to cut the deficit to seven. Sophomore Connor Hanavan was the catalyst of the run, scoring seven of the 11 points, as Emmanuel fought back to trail 69-62.

That Emmanuel scoring run was met with an 11-3 run of their own by SJC, reestablishing the 15-point edge with 7:43 to go. Donato and Silvano Ismali combined to score eight points for the Monks as their lead increased back to double digits.

The visitor's advantage would stay in double figures through the final 7:43 as Saint Joseph's remains at the top of the conference with the 92-80 win.

Donato scored a game-high 27 points on 12-of-15 shooting in 35 minutes. Ismani added 21 points and eight rebounds for SJC while Frazier finished the night with 16 points on 6-for-10 from the field, including 4-for-8 shooting from three-point land.

Saints sophomore Mahari Guerrier scored a team-high 26 points to go with 16 rebounds in a game-high 37 minutes. Guerrier has at least 20 points in six of his last eight games. Sophomore Noah Beaudet added 14 points while Hanavan chipped in with 13 points in 22 minutes off the bench.

The Saints are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15, traveling to Colby-Sawyer for a GNAC game at 3:00 p.m. The Monks wrap up a three-game road trip with a game against Mitchell on Saturday afternoon.
