STANDISH, Maine – In Tuesday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinals, only the third quarter separated the Saint Joseph's Monks and the Emmanuel Saints, as the second-seeded Monks advanced into the GNAC Semifinals via a 72-65 win over the Saints on Mike McDevitt Court.
The victory moves the Monks to 20-6 and sends Saint Joseph's into Thursday's semifinals where they will host the Albertus Magnus Falcons. The Saints season comes to a close with the loss, as they finish the year at 14-13.
Emmanuel held a 32-30 lead heading to the decisive third quarter where the critical plays of Tuesday's quarterfinals came over the final 1:48.
Tied at 44-44 in the last minutes of the third, the Monks pushed away with seven straight points to end the quarter. A pair of made free throws each by
Madison Lebel and
Mackenzie Currie, along with a three-pointer by
Logan Brown, contributed to the 7-0 run that put the Monks ahead 51-44.
The run continued into the fourth quarter as another Brown three-point make and a jumper by
Elisabeth Staplefeld boosted the lead to a dozen. The Saints could only close within five points in the final minutes, as a 12-0 run spanning two quarters and a total of 2:59 made the difference in Saint Joseph's win.
Emmanuel led by as many as 10 in the first half, using a 16-3 run to end the first and start the second quarter, spanning 6:19 in total, giving them a 29-19 lead. First-year
Lia Krumian scored eight points in the run while graduate
Olivia Matela and sophomore
Kalia Saunders each added four points. But the Monks finished the quarter on an 11-3 run, resulting in just a two-point lead at the half for the Saints.
For the Monks,
Angelica Hurley scored a game-high 27 points in 38 minutes. Brown added 12 points thanks to 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc while
Grace Ramsdell finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
Krumian wraps up her rookie season with a career-high 19 points, off the bench, on 9-for-14 shooting. Saunders added a career-high 15 points, going 7-for-8 from the floor in 27 minutes. The Saints season finishes despite their second-highest shooting percentage this season as the visitors shot 52.7 percent on the night.
The Monks play host to the third-seeded Albertus Magnus Falcons on Thursday night. In their regular season meeting, the Monks beat the Falcons 83-77 in overtime at Albertus.
