Softball Concludes Florida Spring Break With Losses to Moravian, St. Mary's (Minn.)

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Emmanuel softball suffered a pair of losses on Friday evening, falling to Moravian 7-0 in game one, followed by a 9-1 loss to Saint Mary's of Minnesota, in game two, ending the Saints Spring Break in Florida from the DiamondPlex Softball Fields.

Game 1: Moravian 7, Emmanuel 0
After the Saints were retired in order in the top of the first, Moravian looked to strike first. Following two quick outs, the Greyhounds sparked a two-out rally with a Marcie Silberman base hit. Consecutive singles followed, bringing Silberman home and giving Moravian a 1-0 lead after one.

The Greyhounds added to their advantage in the second when Sarah DeStefano reached on an infield error. Holly Walter later drove her in with a double to left, making it 2-0.

Emmanuel looked to respond in the third, opening the inning with their first and only hit of the game on a single from MeKayla Poisson. The Saints were unable to generate anymore offense in the inning, going down in order after the leadoff single to keep the deficit at 2-0.

Moravian capitalized on back-to-back hit-by-pitches to start the bottom of the third, opening the door for a big inning. A wild pitch brought home one run before Ajala Elmore's triple drove in two more. An RBI groundout capped off the offensive surge, pushing the Greyhounds' lead to 6-0.

Moravian tacked on their final run in the sixth and secured a 7-0 win to extend their winning streak to six games.

Mackenzie Briggs pitched well in relief for the Saints, tossing four innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits.

Kyra Holtje and Alaja Elmore each tallied two hits for the Greyhounds, with Elmore driving in a pair of runs. Holtje also led the way in the circle, earning the win with a complete-game, one-hit shutout while striking out six.

Game 2: Saint Mary's (Minn.) 9, Emmanuel 1 (Final/6)
The Cardinal struck first in the top of the first after a Saints error helped Saint Mary's to a 1-0 lead. But the Saints offense responded in the bottom half of the inning, starting the frame with back-to-back singles for Francesca Pizzarella and MeKayla Poisson. Two batters later and following a wild pitch, senior Taylor Chelak produced an RBI groundout to tie the game 1-1.

Saint Mary's slowly increased their lead, scoring in five of the six innings in Friday's evening session. An RBI single by senior Allison Ciero in the top of the second gave the Cardinal a one-run lead. After a scoreless third, an RBI groundout in the fourth by Ciero gave the Cardinal a 3-1 lead. The Saint Mary's advantage increased to 4-1 in the fifth with the help of a sacrifice bunt by junior Payton Berg.

Meanwhile, the Saints offense continued to produce hits but was unable to take advantage in their Spring Break finale. A pair of second inning singles eventually led to both Saints being left on without scoring. A third inning double by Alexis Martineau went without scoring as the Cardinal ended the threat with consecutive strikeouts.

Saint Mary's managed to produce their big inning in the sixth, scoring five runs on the way to a run-rule victory. A bases-clearing triple by sophomore Makayla Steffes posted three of the Cardinals five runs in the frame, boosting their lead to 9-1. Emmanuel was unable to take it to the seventh as back-to-back pop-outs to second base ended Friday night's finale.

Seven different Saints came away with a hit against Saint Mary's including Pizzarella going 1-for-3 as she finishes her Florida trip having reached base safely in nine of Emmanuel's 10 games. Poission added another hit to her trip, ending her Spring Break with hits in three straight games.

The Saints return to Boston but don't return to action until Thursday, March 20, where they host Emerson on Clemente Field, starting at 3:00 p.m.
