Softball Falls Twice in Non-Conference Doubleheader at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. -

GAME ONE: Roger Williams 5 - Emmanuel 2

Roger Williams University earned a 5–2 home victory over Emmanuel College on April 2, 2025, behind timely hitting and strong performances on the mound. The Hawks improved to 11–8 on the season, while Emmanuel dropped to 2–17. Roger Williams struck early and maintained control thanks to a balanced offensive attack and a strong bullpen performance.

Leading the way offensively was third baseman Christina Denovelli, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Denovelli opened the scoring for RWU in the first inning with a two-out RBI single that tied the game at 1-1. Outfielder Vianna Chamberlin delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon with a two-run homer to straightaway center in the second inning, giving the Hawks a 3–1 lead they would never surrender. In the third, Lucy Maurao added to the tally with a solo home run to left field, and J. Wells drove in an unearned run with a sacrifice fly, capping a two-run inning that extended the lead to 5–2.

On the mound, starter Skye Merrow went three innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with four strikeouts. Sophia Bruno came on in relief and earned her first win of the season with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks. Raegen Germano closed out the game with a dominant seventh, striking out two of the three batters faced to record her first save. The pitching staff combined to hold Emmanuel to just four hits, all singles, and did not allow a run after the third inning.

Saints first-year Molly Carnes finished game one batting 3-for-3, all singles. Senior Taylor Chelak had the other Saints hit, finishing 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

GAME TWO: Roger Williams 5 - Emmanuel 3

Roger Williams University completed a sweep of their doubleheader against Emmanuel College on April 2, 2025, with a 5–3 win in game two, moving to 12–8 on the season. Strong hitting early and clutch pitching late helped the Hawks secure the non-conference victory at Paolino Field.

Offensively, the Hawks provided 12 hits, with center fielder Lucy Maurao leading the charge. She went 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and two RBIs. Catcher Nicolette Fraser added two hits, including an RBI double in the fourth, while Vianna Chamberlin also chipped in with two singles and a run scored. Caroline Thomas and Shannon Starratt each drove in a run, and Thomas added a sacrifice fly that capped a three-run third inning. Overall, Roger Williams did their damage early, scoring all five of their runs in the third and fourth innings.

On the mound, starter Natalie Lundari worked three scoreless innings before handing the ball to Ava Fairbanks, who picked up the win. Fairbanks was charged with two earned runs over three innings but escaped further trouble with five strikeouts. Keira Quadros came in to close, tossing a scoreless seventh to earn his second save of the season. Roger Williams pitchers combined to strike out nine and walked just three, limiting Emmanuel's chances despite allowing eight hits.

The key offensive inning came in the third, when RWU plated three runs on four hits. Fraser's leadoff single set the tone, and Maurao and Starratt followed with RBI singles. In the fourth, Chamberlin singled and came around to score on Fraser's double, before Maurao added another RBI hit to make it 5–0. Emmanuel rallied in the fifth with three runs, including an RBI double and a sac fly, but RWU's bullpen shut them down from there.

First-year Molly Canes and senior Taylor Chelak continued their hitting ways in game two, both finishing 3-for-4, including a double for Chelak. Junior Christyna Winstead was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and one run scored.

With the victory, Roger Williams improves to 12–8 overall. Next up, the Hawks will face Salve Regina on April 4, followed by matchups against Western New England (April 6) and Endicott (April 9). The losses move Emmanuel to 2-16 as they prepare for Simmons on Friday at 5:00 and 7:00.
