CHICOPEE, Mass. - After dropping the opening set in Thursday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match, Emmanuel men's volleyball rattled off three straight set wins on the way to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-18) victory over the Elms Blazers in conference play at Picknelly Arena.
With the win, the Saints move to 16-10 (9-3 GNAC) and have won six consecutive matches, heading into their regular season finale on Saturday. The Blazers have dropped three straight as they battle for the final position in the GNAC Postseason, now sitting at 6-21 (3-9 GNAC).
The Blazers got out front in the opening set by taking advantage of the Saints 0.095 attack percentage in the opening frame. While Emmanuel combined for only six team kills in the first set, Elms collected 14 kills on 27 attempts, hitting .259 from the floor in the 25-23 set win.
The visiting Saints recovered in the second set with 16 kills on 26 attempts with just three errors, on the way to a 25-15 set win. Junior
Trey Guest finished with five kills in the set while senior
Louis Da Silva chipped in with four kills.
The offense continued for Emmanuel in the third while the attack for the Blazers sputtered in the Saints 25-20 set win. The blue and gold hit .385 compared to the 0.08 attack percentage from Elms, leading to the set win for the Saints.
The Saints matched their performance from the second set in the fourth, hitting .500 from the floor, needing just 22 attempts to record 12 kills with one error. Junior
Michael Shelley finished the final set with six of the Saints 12 kills, on the way to the 25-18 set win and 3-1 match victory.
Shelley was efficient for the Saints again on Thursday, finishing with a team-high 17 kills on a .469 hitting percentage. Guest added a dozen kills on 18 attempts with just one error, hitting a blazing .611 on the night.Â
Blazers sophomore
Nicholas Uschmann finished with 17 kills to go with six digs and two aces. Fellow sophomore
John Bellafronte added 10 kills on a .444 hitting percentage.
The Saints wrapped up the regular season with a tri-match Saturday against Emerson and Rivier, hosted by the Lions and starting at 11:00 a.m. The GNAC Postseason begins on Tuesday, April 8, with times and opponents to be named following Saturday's regular season finales across the conference.
