Saints Softball Season Ends in Pair of One-Run Losses to Johnson & Wales, Simmons

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of one-run losses on Saturday afternoon meant the end of the season for Emmanuel softball, as they were eliminated from Pod B after losing in the double-elimination tournament to Johnson & Wales, followed by Simmons.

GAME ONE: Johnson & Wales 4 – Emmanuel 3
The first one-run loss on the Saints day came as a result of a walk-off win for the Wildcats. Emmanuel was just three outs away from advancing along in the winner's bracket, but the seventh inning put together by Johnson & Wales put them through in the winner's draw.

The Saints led 3-0, headed to the bottom of the seventh, where Wildcat hits and Saints miscues would allow JWU post four runs, on their way to a 4-3 win.

After a single, a walk, and a wild pitch, the Wildcats had two runners in scoring position with one out, setting the stage for their victory. An RBI single brought the Wildcats within two, while an error on the next at-bat made it 3-2.

The final at-bat of the day belonged to Morgan Pelletier, who came in clutch with a two-run double into the left-center gap, walking off with the 4-3 win.

The Saints got their 3-0 advantage thanks to a solo home run in the third by senior Taylor Chelak and a two-run double in the top of the sixth by senior Abigail Farr.

Pelletier and Mady Lyons both finished 2-for-4 in the win. Mackenzie Clee finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Farr, senior Madison Marks, and sophomore Mia Fernandes all batted 2-for-4, with Farr adding a pair of RBI. Chelak went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

GAME TWO: Simmons 1 – Emmanuel 0
The Saints had not been shutout in over a month entering the loser's bracket elimination game, but their season would come to a close after surrendering just one run, but unable to score in the shutout loss.

The Sharks run came in the bottom of the third with Raya Anderson reaching base on a bunt single. After advancing on a wild pitch, Teagan Buckley singled to center, scoring Anderson from second.

After a slow start, Sharks pitcher Piper Kinney locked in to help Simmons advance to Sunday's play. After allowing two hits in the first two innings, Kinney wouldn't surrender another hit over the final five innings, as Saints only reached base via a walk.

No Saints player advanced past second after the fourth inning, while Kinney retired the 11 batters she faced, helping the Sharks defeat the Saints for the first time this season.

Anderson went 2-for-2 with a pair of bunt singles. Buckley and Ally Hyde both finished 1-for-3, while Kinney struck out 11 in the shutout.

Sophomores Francesca Pizzarella and MeKayla Poisson had the Saints hits, finishing 1-for-3 and 1-for-2, respectively.
