BOSTON - For the first time since 2003, Emmanuel women's volleyball is off to an 11-1 start to the season, thanks to a straight sets victory over the Salem State Vikings (25-9, 25-19, 25-17) on Wednesday night in non-conference action from Andy Yosinoff Court.
The 11-1 start matches the same 12-match opening from the 2003 season. The program from 22 years ago started 16-1 overall, on the way to a 28-5 campaign. The Vikings drop to 5-8 with the loss and have dropped three in a row to Emmanuel.
The opening set was all Saints, as they claimed 12 of the first 16 points, holding a 12-4 lead. A 10-0 run later in the set continued the runaway frame for Emmanuel, on the way to their 25-9 victory.
In the second set, Salem State led in the early going, but a 7-1 surge in the middle of the set pushed the home side ahead 16-12. Another run by the Saints, this time of 6-1, provided the gap needed to claim the second, 25-19.
The final set was similar to the second, as the two teams battled for momentum, until Emmanuel scored five out of six in the middle of the set, boosting their advantage to 17-9. Ultimately, the set belonged to sophomore
Amber Hong as she went 6-for-12 on attacks, hitting .500 from the floor, leading the Saints to a 25-17 win.
Saints senior
Isabella Marquez finished with a team-high eight kills while junior
Scheala Nielsen added seven kills to go along with nine digs. Junior
Kason Huynh chipped in with 18 assists, six digs, and three aces.
Emmanuel heads to the Long Island area this weekend, opening a three-match stretch in New York with a Friday night match against Farmingdale State at 6:00 p.m., hosted at Hofstra University.
