Yonkers, N.Y. - Men's Volleyball used a balanced attack to get into the win column on Friday night with a straight sweep of Sarah Lawrence College. The Saints (1-3) came back from Hawaii still looking for its first win of the season, and they were able to do it in convincing fashion, beating the Gryphons (0-1) by at least six points in each set.
The first set started as a back-and-forth affair with both sides still trying to find their footing. This was the case until a quick 4-0 spurt from the Saints gave them some breathing room at 14-9, highlighted by a kill from first year outside hitter
Brendan McGinley. Emmanuel used another 4-0 run to pull away from the Gryphons, as they held a 20-12 advantage late and were able to polish off their first set victory at 25-16.
With the Gryphons holding a slight 3-2 advantage to start the second set, the Saints erupted with a 7-0 run to put themselves in the driver's seat once again holding a 9-3 lead. The team used three service aces from senior
Trey Guest to ignite the run. Emmanuel was able to nip any Sarah Lawrence run in the bud the rest of the set, with the largest being a 4-0 run to cut the road team's lead to 16-12. This would prove to be futile, as the Saints picked up their second set victory at 25-19.
Emmanuel started the third set hot, jumping out to a 10-5 advantage. The Gryphons were not done yet though, as they won eight of the next 10 points, taking the lead at 13-12. The set was all knotted at 14, when the Saints went on a match-sealing 6-0 run to take the lead at 20-14. This run was started by yet another powerful kill from McGinley. The squad cruised the rest of the way, winning 25-17, tallying their first win of the campaign in straight sets.
The Saints were led by McGinley and first year outside hitter
Collin Martin, both tallying seven kills.
Trey Guest finished with four service aces, and sophomore setter
Loden Broe contributed with 13 assists.
Men's Volleyball will be back on the court this Wednesday, as they welcome MIT in for a 7:00 PM first serve in the team's home opener.
