Men’s Volleyball Notches Fourth Straight Win Behind Career Night From Guest, Defeating Curry 3-1

Boston - Men's Volleyball (5-5) tallied their fourth win in a row on Wednesday night at Andy Yosinoff Court, behind a career night from senior Trey Guest. The Colonels of Curry College (3-6) were able to make an impressive rally to take the third set, but that would be the only set they got, as the Saints secured a 3-1 win. This victory gets Emmanuel back to .500 on the year, right before the team begins the critical Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) portion of the schedule.

The Saints came out of the gate strong on Wednesday night, as a kill from senior Trey Guest gave the team a 6-3 advantage. The offense kept on chugging from there, as a kill from junior Cayson Branconier extended the lead to 14-9, and forcing a timeout from the Colonels. Curry kept fighting, eventually taking the lead at 20-19 with a service ace. It was 23-22 Saints as we crept near the end of the first set, when a loud kill from Guest gave Emmanuel the slight boost they needed, taking the first set by a score of 25-23.

The second set was all knotted up at six when the Saints eventually found their stride, rattling off four unanswered points and gaining control, thanks to a Tye Barrett service ace. Yet another 4-0 sprint from Emmanuel later in the set put them in the driver's seat for good, dominating the Colonels 25-16.

Looking to polish off a clean sweep, the Saints used a 7-0 run jump ahead 12-5 early on. The match looked like it was nearing its close, but the Colonels didn't hear a bell. They rattled off 13 of the next 15 points, taking a 18-14 lead, stunning Emmanuel and the home crowd. The Saints were unable to recover, dropping the set 25-21 after having seemingly full control.

Curry took that momentum into the fourth set, taking a 7-3 lead right off the bat. A few much needed errors from the Colonels, and a service ace from Senior Rob Moore and the lead was cut to one at 7-6.

The set was even at 12 when the Saints grabbed the next three points, along with control of the set. First year outside hitter Collin Martin was a catalyst during the run, contributing two electric kills to take a 15-12 lead. Holding a 24-16 advantage, a kill from Trey Guest, one of his career-high 26, polished off the set and match victory for the team.

First year Tye Barrett paced the offense with 37 assists, to go along with 12 digs. Senior middle blocker Rob Moore anchored the defense, racking up a career high seven total blocks. Nathan Sierra-Suan also pitched in seven kills and seven digs.

The Saints will return to action next Thursday for a massive GNAC matchup against the #11 ranked Wentworth Leopards. First serve will be at 6:00 PM on Andy Yosinoff Court.
