Softball’s 7th Inning Rally Falls Short in 6-4 Loss to Wentworth

Boston - A big 7th inning from the visiting Wentworth Leopards spoiled the Saints home opener on Tuesday night at Clemente Field. With the game knotted at three going into the 7th, the Leopards (3-12) got three runs over the plate, including the game-winning run to lift them over the Saints (3-11).

In the top of the 2nd, Wentworth got the scoring underway as a single to center field by Kelsey Medalia got a run in, moving the score to 1-0. In the same inning, the Saints fired right back as sophomore Sydney Taylor took a pitch over the plate and sent it right back over the left field fence, knotting the game at 1.

As reigning rookie of the week Carmen Crockett was dealing on the plate to keep the Leopards at one, Emmanuel was able to grab the lead in the fourth. Sydney Taylor struck again as this time an RBI single scored Grace Garon, giving the team a 2-1 lead.

That lead would hold all the way until the sixth, when a two-run shot from Lauren Trostel gave the visitors the lead right back. That lead would not last long, as first year Rylee Smith returned the favor with a home run of her own to even the score at 3.

In the seventh inning, both offenses stayed hot. Firstly, the Leopards got to Crockett as she crossed the century mark in pitches, as Trostel doubled to left field, scoring two runs. Abby Delia hit another single to bring Trost home, as Wentworth notched three runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Emmanuel didn't go down quietly, as they loaded the bases and got the winning run up to the plate. MeKayla Poisson singled up the middle bringing home a run and keeping the bases loaded, unfortunately the team could not get any more runs across the plate as they fell to Wentworth, 6-4.

Sydney Taylor led the way for the Saints, with a home run and an RBI single. Garon and Poisson also chipped in two hits a piece. Crockett struck out nine batters as she continued her stellar rookie campaign. Lauren Trostel paced the Leopards, as she recorded two hits and 4 RBI's.
