Men's Soccer Plays Johnson & Wales to Scoreless Draw on Saturday Afternoon

BOSTON — Emmanuel men's soccer fought to a hard-earned 0-0 draw against Johnson & Wales at Roberto Clemente Field, in Saturday's non-conference match. The Saints were back on the field just 18 hours after defeating Rhode Island College on Friday night.

The Saints' best scoring chance came in the 25th minute, when first-year Jacob Nardelli rattled the right post on a shot that nearly gave Emmanuel the lead. His attempt was headed for the top-right corner before being denied by the woodwork.

JWU pushed hard in the second half, with Christopher Vargas nearly winning it for the Wildcats in the 81st minute. Vargas lined up an attempt from 30 yards and clanked his shot off the left post, keeping things scoreless.

The home side was outshot 13-9 on the afternoon and controlled just one corner kick to JWU's six. Saints first-year goalie David Derk made three stops in the Emmanuel net, moving to 0-1-1 this season.

Saturday's scoreless draw is the first for the Saints in over a year, after they finished in a 0-0 tie last year on August 31 at Wentworth.

With the result, Emmanuel moves to 1-1-1 on the season, while JWU improves to 1-0-1. The Saints will look to build on a strong weekend when they return to play on Wednesday, Sept. 9, hosting College of the Fenway foe, Wentworth, on Clemente Field at 7:00 p.m.
