BOSTON, Mass. - The Falcons of Albertus Magnus College downed the Emmanuel Saints, 2-0 in the opener of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Roberto Clemente Field. The loss for Emmanuel caused the Saints to drop to 1-2 on the season, while the Falcons improved to 2-1-1 overall.
The Falcons struck early, when sophomore midfielder Kyle Kelly (Stratford, Conn.) dropped a ball over the head of Emmanuel's rookie keeper Wilhelm Du Bois (Key Biscayne, Fla.) in the 10th minute of play. Kelly was assisted by freshman defender Chris Long (West Haven, Conn.). The two teams played scoreless for the remainder of the first period will the rain fell steadily on the turf at Clemente. The Falcons out-shot the Saints, 7-3, in the opening half and Albertus Magnus took a one goal lead into the break.
The Saints managed to hold the Falcons off for another thirty-three minutes, before AMC found the scoreboard for the second time. Sophomore forward Jamahl Howard (West Haven, Conn.) got a helper from freshman midfielder Taylor Sasloe (Norwalk, Conn.) at 78:02, giving the Falcons a 2-goal lead. Despite out-shooting the visitors, 12-9, in the second half, Emmanuel could not overcome the deficit and walked off with a two-goal defeat.
Du Bois notched 5 saves in his collegiate debut for the Saints. Albertus Magnus' senior keeper Gerald O'Connor (Hamden, Conn.) made 7 saves in the win for the Falcons.
The Saints will be back in action on Tuesday night (9/15), when they travel to Chicopee, Mass. to take on the Blazers of Elms College in a 7pm start.
