MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS SEASON OPENER TO NO. 15 MIT, 91-61

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Emmanuel College men's basketball team lost the season opener against No. 15 MIT, 91-61 on Wednesday evening in Cambridge, Mass.

Overall, 13 different players' tallied scores for the Saints in the contest. Junior Andre Fuller (Troy, N.Y.) led the team with 11 points for the Saints while junior Isaiah Duke (Albany, N.Y.) added two blocks and senior Tony Carter-Hill (Baltimore, Md.) posted two assists. Junior Nate Jackson (Middleboro, Mass.) grabbed one offensive and six defensive rebounds for seven total boards in the game. Freshman Theo Robinson chipped in with three offensive and three defensive rebounds as well.

The Cardinal and Gray jumped out to a quick lead, scoring the game's first six points and taking a 12-4 advantage just over five minutes in. A three-point play by Carter-Hill and a layup from Fuller pulled the Saints back within three, but MIT quickly responded with a 14-2 run over the next 3:41 to open up a 15-point advantage.

Eric Zuk capped the run with a tremendous hustle play, stealing the ball at midcourt, grabbing a rebound at the offensive end and finding Kates for a driving score. Kates scored nine of Tech's 14 points during the spurt.

MIT led 47-24 at the end of the first stanza. Emmanuel managed to close the gap in the second, only allowing 44 points to 37 of its own.

The Saints were 8-27 from the floor in the first half and 16-39 in the second. The team also shot 10-23 from the free-throw line and 3-10 for beyond the arc. Neither squad was immune to early season lapses, as the teams combined to commit 59 fouls and turn the ball over 54 times.

The Saints' bench proved to be a strong spot for the squad, as it managed to tally 38 points compared to MIT's 29. The Engineers led the Saints with 38 points in the paint compared to Emmanuel's 34. One noticeable difference in the game was MIT's 35 points off turnovers while the Saints could only grab 22.

Emmanuel will next travel to take part in the NYU Tip-Off Tournament this weekend, opening up against Cortland State on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
