4TH-STRAIGHT SWEEP FOR MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Emmanuel College Men's Volleyball Team picked up its fourth-straight sweep, winning a three-set decision over Johnson & Wales University on Monday night. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest played at the Harborside Recreation Center on Monday evening was the Saints' 10th win of the season and their 6th in league play. Emmanuel posted a 30-20 win in game one, a 30-26 win in game two and wrapped up the sweep with a 30-23 victory in the third game.

Emmanuel junior Tyson Rietz (Granite Bay, Calif.) recorded 11 kills and six digs while junior Curtis Abram (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) added eight kills, hitting .571 for the Saints. Freshman Nick Updike dished out 25 assists and tallied five kills in the victory. Abram and Thomas McCaffrey (Massapequa, N.Y.) combined for 6 blocks on the defensive side.

Johnson & Wales was led by junior Eric Minnich (Concord, Calif.) with 13 kills and four blocks, while sophomore Petar Yanikiev (Varna, Bulguria) with eight kills, six digs and two service aces. Sophomore Robert Slough (Buffalo, N.Y.) had 26 set assists in the setback.

With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 4-7 for the year and 1-4 in the GNAC while Emmanuel improves to 10-4, 6-1 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action this weekend when they travel to the Vassar Tournament on Friday, February 19th, starting at 4:00 p.m. Emmanuel will play again this Thursday night, in a GNAC match at Lasell College at 7pm.
