BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Men's Volleyball Team rolled to a 3-0 win over Emerson College. The Saints topped the Lions in three quick sets in a cross-town Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match played in the Jean Yawkey Center on Tuesday night. The opening set was a 32-30 scare, before the Saints stormed back to 30-15 and 30-16 wins in sets two and three.
The Saints took the first lead of the contest on a big kill in the middle from freshman Zachary Caron (Hope, R.I.). Emmanuel led 4-1 before a 4-0 Emerson run put the Lions out in front, 5-4. Another kill by Caron tied things up at 5-all. After four more ties, the Saints took a 12-11 lead on a block by junior opposite Matt Salvi (Trumbull, Conn.). A kill and a block by Emerson senior Bay Scoggin (Dallas, Texas) were part of a 4-0 Lions run, which put Emerson up 15-12 and forced an Emmanuel time-out.
Three hitting errors and two blocking errors by the Saints gave the Lions a 20-12 advantage, as Emerson rattled off 9 unanswered points. A kill by Emmanuel outside hitter Alex McKeen (Stoughton, Mass.) brought the score to 22-15. An Emerson kill by Eric Doherty (Millis, Mass.) pushed the Lions' spread to 25-17. The Saints chipped away, cutting their deficit to six points, and forcing an Emerson time-out at 25-19.
Out of the time-out, the two teams traded points to 27-23, before an ace by Michael Townsend (Beaverdam, Va.) and a kill from Curtis Abram (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) brought the score to 27-25 and forced a second time-out by the Lions. A block by Emerson sophomore Frank O'Sullivan (Ottawa, Ontario) gave the Lions a 29-25 lead and forced Emmanuel's final time-out of the set.
The Saints put four-straight points on the board to tie the set at 29-all. An Emerson kill followed by a kill and back-to-back aces from Emmanuel junior Tyson Rietz (Granite Bay, Calif.) gave the Saints a 32-30 win. Emmanuel took set one after trailing early, 21-12.
Consecutive kills by Townsend and Rietz put the Saints up 13-6 in set two. Back-to-back aces by Abram built a 25-12 cushion for the Saints. A kill by Alexander Petty (Wayland, Mass.) brought the spread to 26-13. An Emerson kill by Jeff Ackerstein (Newton, Mass.) cut the Lions' deficit to 26-14. A service ace by Nick Updike pushed the Saints to 28-14. Two-straight kills by Cameron Todd (Los Angeles, Calif.) gave the Saints their 29th and 30th points and Emmanuel took set two, 30-15
Emmanuel built an 8-5 lead in set three on a kill by Townsend. The Saints held a solid lead throughout the set and Jim Sutherland (Concord, Calif.) served off three-straight points to give Emmanuel a 26-14 lead. An ace by Emmanuel sophomore Michael Mottola (Quincy, Mass.) put the Saints up 28-14. A big block by Thomas McCaffrey (Massapequa, N.Y.) gave the Saints their 29th point. Match point came on an Emerson serving error and the Saints won, 30-16.
Emmanuel will return to action this Saturday afternoon (2/13) in a tri-match at the University of New Haven. The Saints will take on Albertus Magnus College in a GNAC match at 11am and UNH in a non-conference match at 1pm.
