PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Emmanuel College Men's Volleyball Team, ranked 11th in today's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll, topped Johnson & Wales University, 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match played at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening. The win improved the Saints to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in GNAC play. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Despite a dismal 16 service errors in the match, the Saints capitalized on a .343 hitting percentage as a team. Emmanuel took the first game by a score of 25-15 and the 2-0 advantage with a 25-21 win in game two. The Saints wrapped up the victory with a 25-14 win in the third and final game.
Emmanuel was paced by Curtis Abram (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), who was named this week's GNAC Player of the Week. Abram led the Saints' attack with 10 kills and three service aces. Fellow-senior Tyson Rietz (Granite Bay, Calif.) returned to action with 8 kills and 4 blocks for Emmanuel. Senior middle Cam Todd (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit .714 for the match with 6 kills in 7 swings, while Thomas McCaffrey (Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded a match-high 6 blocks. Sophomore setter Nick Updike recorded 25 assists, 7 kills and 5 digs, while Jake DeLuise (Wakefield, R.I.) picked up a match-high 7 digs in the victory for the visiting Saints.
Johnson & Wales was led by freshman Alex Viera (Bay Short, N.Y.) with four kills, while senior Dan Struebing (Coventry, R.I.) had four kills and four blocks for the Wildcats. Freshman Gerard Daniels (Miami, Fla.) notched 12 assists in the setback.
The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 29th when they travel to Wentworth for a tri-match with Wentworth and CCNY starting at 11:00 a.m. Emmanuel will host Newbury College in a non-conference match on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
