NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Emmanuel Men's Soccer Team's hopes of
post-season home match were foiled on Wednesday afternoon, when the
Saints were defeated by Norwich University, 3-1. The Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match was played on a rainy
Howard Field in Northfield, Vermont. The Saints, who recently set
the program-record for wins in a season, dropped to 9-5-4 on the
year and 4-5 in the league with the loss. Norwich boosted its
ledger to 8-8 and 5-4 in the GNAC.
The Cadets were led by a pair of goals from sophomore forward
Joe Young, as well as one tally from midfielder Anthony Amell.
Young got NU on the board with 10 seconds left in the first half by
knocking home a loose ball after a scramble in the penalty area
from freshman Chris Bristol's corner kick.
Young struck again in the 58th minute with what would prove to
be the game-winning goal off an assist from junior forward Garrett
Shufelt to give the Cadets a 2-0 lead. The tally was Young's sixth
of the season and gave him sole possession of the team lead for
goals surpassing Shufelt's five.
Amell increased the lead to 3-0 by converting on the Cadets'
second penalty-kick opportunity of the season after Shufelt was
fouled in the penalty box. Amell beat Emmanuel goalkeeper Jeremy Scanlon on
the ground to Scanlon's right. Scanlon, who was making his first
collegiate start between the pipes, picked up 4 saves in the
effort.
The Saints prevented Norwich goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom from
picking up his fourth shutout of the season when Danny Richman beat
the freshman keeper to cut the deficit to 3-1. Hallstrom made three
saves to improve to 5-3 on the year.
With the win, Norwich moved into a tie for fourth place in the
GNAC standings with Lasell. The Cadets can clinch home field for
the first round of the playoffs with a victory on Saturday and
Lasell losing to first place Albertus Magnus. Emmanuel will play in
its last game of the regular season on Saturday in Paxton, Mass,
taking on Anna Maria College in a GNAC men's and women's
double-header.
