FOLEY LIFTS EMMANUEL MEN'S SOCCER PAST ALBERTUS MAGNUS, 1-0

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman defender Zach Foley (Uncasville, Conn.) scored his first collegiate goal to lift the Emmanuel College men's soccer team past Albertus Magnus College, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Roberto Clemente Field. The win lifts the Saints to 9-10 overall and 5-4 in the GNAC while the loss drops the Falcons to 5-9-2 and 2-5-2 in GNAC play.

After 61 minutes of scoreless action, the Saints were able to crack the scoring column with Foley's first goal of the year. Following a defensive clear from freshman outside back Jeff Allen (South Windsor, Conn.), the Saints transitioned into an offensive mindset heading into a strong headwind. Allen's ball hung in the air allowing freshman forward Wojciech Kopacz (Garfield, N.J.) to control the long-ball. Kopacz found a streaking Foley at the top of the Falcons 18-yard box and the rookie volleyed a one-time rocket into the upper 90 of the Albertus net for the game-winner.

The Falcons had two great chances over the final three minutes of play to get the equalizer but were unable to convert.  Junior defender Tyler Peloquin (Beacon Falls, Conn.) almost evened the match with a right-footed rocket from 30 yards out the ricocheted off the crossbar.  Less than two minutes later, Peloquin found the ball at his feet following a scrum in the Saints' box. This time the junior ripped a low shot towards the far post but Emmanuel junior goalkeeper Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) made a huge save to keep Emmanuel on top and preserve the 1-0 advantage.

Albertus Magnus finished the afternoon with a 14-7 shots advantage including an 11-2 margin in the second half of play when they had the wind at their backs.

Charette earned his sixth win of the year in net for the Saints making seven saves for his second  shutout of the season and eighth of his career which moves him into second all-time for career shutouts in EC men's soccer history. Senior Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) made three saves in goal for the Falcons.

Prior to the start of the match, the Emmanuel athletic department recognized and honored its five seniors in Ryan Brady (Springfield, Vt.), Bill Bernier (Strafford, N.H.), Kevin Esposito (Gales Ferry, Conn.), Allan Parrelli (Reading, Mass.) and Danny Richman (Medfield, Mass.).

Emmanuel will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 30 when they head across the river t face MIT in their non-conference season-finally while Albertus Magnus will be idle until the GNAC tournament next weekend. With the win, Emmanuel has secured the #6 seed while the Falcons will finish either #7 or #8 depending on other results today in the conference.
