The Lead: Freshman midfielder Erick Goncalves (Cumberland, R.I.) scored his first collegiate goal to lift Johnson & Wales University past host Emmanuel College, 1-0, Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Roberto Clemente Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Johnson & Wales outshot the Saints 11-2 in the opening half but was unable to find the back of the net as the score remained at 0-0 heading into halftime.
  • Both teams had their best scoring chances in the final two minutes of the opening stanza as JWU junior midfielder Jozef Jennings (Barrington, R.I.) found himself on a semi-breakaway but EC sophomore goalie Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.) made the save. With 1:15 to play in the frame, EC junior forward Henri Morrison (Monterey, Mass.) had an open look from 15 yards out that sailed over the crossbar.
  • The Wildcats continued to control the flow in the second half and had a great look with 27 minutes remaining in regulation as junior midfielder Teagan Drake (Waterbury, Vt.) fired a left footed strike to the far post that Ferrarini made a diving one-handed save on before cleaning up a rebound by Jennings to keep it a 0-0 game.
  • Goncalves broke the tie with his first career goal with less than 16 minutes remaining in regulation. Goncalves cleaned up a loose ball scrum deep in the Saints zone and powered home a right footed shot to give the Wildcats the lead for good.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • JWU dominated the shots, outshooting Emmanuel 21-3 on the evening.
  • The Saints had allowed just one goal over 403 minutes prior to Goncalves goal.
  • Johnson & Wales posted its sixth shutout of the season and fourth in a row, all 1-0 wins.
  • Ferrarini ended the night with nine saves while JWU senior keeper Nicholas Mancini (Toms River, N.J.) made one save to improve to 8-1 on the year in net.
