THE LEAD – Four different players scored four unanswered goals to power the Emmanuel College men's soccer team past host Elms College, 4-1, Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Leary Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blazers got on the board first as Musa Jiana (Brikama, Gambia) found the back of the net in the 18th minute of play, taking advantage of an errant pass from an EC defender to put the hosts on top, 1-0.
  • Emmanuel answered less than 10 minutes later as junior Alec Erskine (Coventry, Conn.) picked up his third goal of the year with the help of a crafty assist from senior back Ethan Skinner (Guilford, Conn.) to even the score at 1-1 at the 26:12 marker.
  • Senior Kyle Monaghan (Monson, Mass.) wasted little time to put the Saints ahead for good, scoring his fourth goal of the year with the help of another Skinner dime to make it 2-1 at 29:42 into the contest.
  • Emmanuel took the 2-1 lead into the break before scoring its third goal only eight minutes into the second half to move the score to 3-1 following an unassisted score by first year forward Joey Soucy (). Just minutes after hitting the crossbar, Soucy found himself on a semi-breakaway and pushed the ball past Elms keeper Collin Liedke (Newington, Conn.) before finding the back of the net for his fourth score of the campaign.
  • First year RJ Darrell (Wethersfield, Conn.) put the game out of reach in the 84th minute with his first collegiate score, hooking up with senior Campbell Shealy (Lexington, S.C.) to account for the 4-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Senior Matthew LaMondia (East Longmeadow, Mass.) made three saves to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the year in net for the Saints while Liedke made four stops for the Blazers.
  • Emmanuel outshot Elms by a 13-6 margin in the win and owned a 4-0 cushion in corner kicks.
  • The 4-1 (.800) start is the best start in program history for Emmanuel through five games, passing the 2011 start of 2-0-3 (.700).
  • The 2-0 start in GNAC play is the first time since 2015 that Emmanuel has opened conference action with a pair of wins.

UP NEXT

  • Emmanuel is off now until Saturday, September 18 when they host Anna Maria College at 12:00 PM in GNAC play at Roberto Clemente Field
  • Elms has a quick turnaround and heads to New Haven, Conn tomorrow (September 15) for a 7:00 PM GNAC affair with the Falcons.
