BOSTON – Emmanuel women's volleyball kept its unbeaten record at home alive on Wednesday night, improving to 9-0 this season on Andy Yosinoff Court, thanks to a 3-1 (25-16, 25-14, 21-25, 25-17) victory over the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen, in non-conference play.
The Saints improve to 13-5 overall and have won three of their last four matches. The Anchorwomen fall to 10-6 on the season as they drop their third straight match.
The opening set featured a battle for control through much of the early parts of the frame. It wasn't until an 8-2 run in the middle of the set that swung momentum toward the Saints for a 22-14 lead. After two Anchorwomen points, the final three points belonged to Emmanuel, clinching the set 25-16.
In the second set, despite running out to an early lead, the Anchorwomen couldn't hold off a strong Saints set. A 9-3 Emmanuel run, which included three kills each for junior
Isabella Marquez and first-year
Amber Hong, made the difference in the second while a red hot .519 attack percentage, including 15 kills on 27 attempts with one error, put on the finishing touches in a 25-14 set win.
The Anchorwomen bounced back in the third thanks to their first major run of the night. Tied at 6-6, Rhode Island College broke away with an 8-0 scoring run that included five Saints errors but three aces for
Daniella Escudero. Emmanuel closed to within two on multiple occasions late in the set, but the Anchorwomen held off the charge, claiming the third 25-21.
The fourth and final set played out similarly to the first frame with both sides looking for control of the play. With a 16-15 lead, the Saints made their move, scoring five points in a row, stretching their lead to 21-15. Rhode Island College couldn't recover as Marquez finished off match point with a kill and a 25-17 set win.
Marquez finished the night with a match-high 23 kills while hitting .333 from the floor. Hong added a career-high 16 kills to go along with 12 digs. Sophomore
Kason Huynh collected her seventh double-double of the year after a night of 46 assists and 17 digs. Senior
Paula Tanguilig added a team-high 19 digs.
Anchorwomen first-year
Olivia Rollinson finished with a team-high nine kills while hitting .217 on the night. Junior
Sydnee Pires chipped in with seven kills and a match-best three blocks while sophomore
Carolyn Bailey had a match-best 20 digs.
The Saints start a seven-match road trip on Saturday, Oct. 19, as they head to Salem State for an 11:00 a.m. match. The Anchorwomen host the University of Southern Maine on Saturday at noon.
