NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Emmanuel women's volleyball swept a Friday night tri-match in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, taking home a pair of straight-set wins over Anna Maria and Albertus Magnus.
The Saints improve to 16-6 (7-3 GNAC) with the win and have now won five of their last six matches. Albertus Magnus fell to 12-12 (3-7 GNAC) while Anna Maria goes to 1-22 (0-8 GNAC).
In the Saints opening match against Anna Maria, a straight sets sweep over the AMCATS (25-13, 25-16, 25-10) opened Emmanuel's play on Friday evening.
After splitting the first six points to a 3-3 tie, the Saints took control with a 10-2 scoring run that included a pair of kills for the first-year duo of
Madison Sherman and
Amber Hong each, giving the Saints a 13-5 edge. Emmanuel went on to hit a match-best .379 in the set, as they continued to pull away to a 25-13 win.
In the second, the Saints started quickly, scoring the first seven points of the set. The momentum stayed with Emmanuel, as their .250 attack percentage in the set brought them a 25-16 win.
In the third set, Emmanuel hit .375 in the widest margin of victory of their match with the AMCATS. A two-point set at 9-7 Emmanuel, the Saints broke out with a match-ending 16-3 spurt, taking the final set 25-10.
Hong finished with a match-high eight kills, hitting .375 in the match. First-year
Ava Olsen added five kills while junior
Maeve Gaffny chipped in with four kills. First-year
Grace Gentile came away with a match-best 10 digs.
In the second match of the night, the Saints pulled off another straight sets win over Albertus Magnus (25-15, 25-18, 26-24) sweeping the GNAC tri-match.
It was another strong opening set for the Saints as they jumped out to an early lead but their 7-0 stretch to close out the opening set while hitting a match-best .241 from the floor in a 25-15 set win.
In the second set, the Saints again closed the set strongly, scoring eight of the last 10, taking a highly-contested set from a 17-16 frame to a 25-18 set victory.
In the third set, it was Albertus Magnus that came out of the gates quickly, scoring six of the first seven points to take the early lead. The Saints recovered swiftly, as they set remained close until the final points. Tied at 24-24, the Saints set up match point on a kill by junior
Isabella Marquez, and converted the match-clinching point on a Falcons error, giving the Saints the 26-24 set win.
First-year
Letitia Bossou led the Saints with 11 kills in match two. Marquez was close behind, finishing the second match with 10 kills. Sophomore
Kason Huynh collected 29 assists and became the eighth player in program history to reach the 1,000-assist plateau.
The Saints are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 30, heading to Curry for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference match.
