BOSTON – Trailing by most of the night, including by as many as 10 in the fourth quarter, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers overcame the late deficit to defeat the Emmanuel Saints in overtime, 71-61, on Yosinoff Court.
From a 10-point deficit to a 10-point win, spanning 11:39 across the fourth quarter and overtime, the Engineers outscored the Saints 29-9 in their comeback victory.
The Engineers improve to 2-2 this season amid a seven-game road trip to open the season. The Saints get handed their first loss of the season, falling to 2-1.
Before the overtime and in the third quarter, Saints grad guard
Olivia Matela knocked down a three-pointer from the right corner with 7:16 to go, becoming the 26
th player in team history to reach 1,000 career points.
At 57-57 entering overtime, the Engineers picked the right time to play their best five-minute stretch of the night, starting the extra session with a 10-0 run. MIT shot 4-of-7 during that 10-point explosion with senior
Angie Choi scoring eight of the Engineers 10 points, giving MIT a 67-57 lead with 1:51 left in overtime.
The Saints chipped the lead down to six with four straight points on a layup by first-year
Lia Krumian and a pair of free throws by senior
Desiree Robinson, to trail 67-61.
But the overtime frame belonged to Choi, as her foul shooting down the stretch clinched the Engineers win, on the way to the 71-61 victory.
In overtime, Choi scored 11 of the Engineers 14 points while shooting 3-for-4 from the field and 4-of-5 at the foul line. Choi added a steal in the final five minutes to cap off the comeback win.
The Saints led by 10 with 6:39 remaining after a pair of free throws by senior
Paris Atuahene gave Emmanuel a 52-42 edge. That 10-point lead was quickly down to four after MIT found a 6-0 run over a span of 1:14, cutting the deficit to 52-48.
Emmanuel never trailed in the final minutes, holding off any MIT surge by trading basket for basket. Matela made a two-point jumper from the top of the key with 2:48 remaining, giving the Saints a 57-53 lead, but the basket marked the final points in regulation for the home side.
With under two minutes, Engineers senior
