BOSTON - For the sixth time in 10 games this season, Emmanuel men's soccer finished 90 minutes in a draw, following a 1-1 result on Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play against the Norwich Cadets at Clemente Field. The Saints move to 3-1-6 this season, including 1-1-3 in the GNAC. The Cadets are now 4-2-4 overall while sitting at 2-2-2 in conference play after Wednesday's draw.
After a slow opening 45 minutes that saw just one shot on goal, coming in the third minute, Emmanuel opened the scoring early in the second half to grab a 1-0 lead. Sophomore
Jacob Beck slid a pass to junior
Luis Pimental at the top of the penalty area. Pimental turned toward the goal, squaring up for a shot that hit the top right corner for the opening tally of the night in the 53rd minute.
The Cadets drew even in the 67th minute thanks to a set-piece opportunity. Off a corner kick, several players crashed toward goal, creating a pile up of Cadets and Saints on the goal line. The cross eventually found the head of
Diego Fuentes, whose attempt deflected off the body of
Sharmarke Hassan, who was one of the players in the pile up. Hassan's unintentional final touch put the ball over the goal line, tying the match 1-1.
Both sides had their chances at a game-winning tally, with the best of the opportunities coming on a free kick cross in the 89th minute, onto the head of Saints senior
Pierre Paul Labossiere. The senior forward flicked on the cross, but his header rolled just wide of the left post, keeping the match tied.
Saints goalie
Owen Silva made three stops for the Saints, as he moves to 3-1-4 this season. Cadets keeper
Tyler Ziminski finished with a pair of saves on his way to a 1-1-1 record this year.
The Saints are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 4, hosting Colby-Sawyer at 3:00 p.m. Emmanuel will celebrate Senior Day prior to kickoff. The Cadets return to play on Saturday, hosting Elms for a 6:00 p.m. match.
