Women's Volleyball Sweeps Simmons in Straight Sets for First Time Since 2010

BOSTON - With one of its toughest rivals on Yosinoff Court on Tuesday night, Emmanuel women's volleyball took care of the Simmons Sharks, claiming a straight sets victory (29-27, 25-15, 25-22) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play between the two Colleges of the Fenway foes. It's the first win for the Saints over the Sharks since 2015 and the first time Emmanuel has beaten Simmons in straight sets since 2010. The victory moves the red-hot Saints to 20-1 (6-0 GNAC), while the Sharks drop to 3-15 (2-4 GNAC) in the loss.

The opening set required extra points for the Saints to escape, with both sides having set points before the home side took the set. Emmanuel was 0-for-2 initially in set points as the Sharks stopped the Saints on two occasions. Simmons nearly stole the opening frame with their set point at 27-26, but sophomore Letitia Bossou came through for the Saints. Senior Isabella Marquez capped the set with back-to-back kills, as Emmanuel took the first, 29-27.

In the second, a flurry of Sharks errors, as well as the best hitting percentage of the night for the Saints gave the home team an easy 25-15 set win. Simmons committed nine attack errors in the set, while Emmanuel went 11-for-22 from the floor, with just one attack error, to hit at .455, in the second set win.

Simmons was poised to force a fourth set as the Saints spotted the Sharks and early 7-2 lead. The visitors held on to that small margin for much of the set until a four-point surge by Emmanuel took them in front 20-18. The Sharks cut the deficit to one on two occasions, but the Saints never surrendered the lead, as a Bossou kill and Sharks attack error ended the third frame in favor of Emmanuel, 25-22.

Bossou finished with a match-high 17 kills to go with a .444 attack percentage on the night. The sophomore right side hitter now has at least 10 kills in each of the last nine matches she's played in. Marquez added 14 kills on .276 hitting from the floor. Sophomore Julia Haight chipped in with seven kills and nine digs.

For the Sharks, Hannah Pridgeon finished with a team-high 11 kills to go with 11 digs. Libero Carolina Rodriguez led all players with 14 digs on the night.

Emmanuel is back on Yosinoff Court on Thursday, Oct. 16, as they host Mitchell for a 7:00 p.m. match. Simmons is also back to action on Thursday, hosting New England College at 7:00 p.m.
