Men's Soccer Scores Three From PK Spot, Posts 4-1 GNAC Victory vs. Regis

BOSTON - Emmanuel men's soccer claimed its fourth win in the last five matches, using three goals from the penalty kick dot to claim a 4-1 victory over the Regis Pride in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Tuesday night on Clemente Field. The Saints move to 7-3-6 (5-3-3 GNAC) in the final regular season home match this year, while the Pride drop to 6-8-1 (6-4-0 GNAC) in the loss.

The match's opening tally came in the third minute after a Pride defender handled the ball in his penalty area. The first of three PKs was taken by sophomore Rafael Matamoros, who fired his attempt into the bottom left corner, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.

The Pride answered in the 37th minute as a ball in behind the Saints defense was run on to by Reynaldo Bautista. The Pride forward won a race to the ball between him and the Emmanuel keeper, resulting in a shot into a wide open net to tie the match, 1-1.

Emmanuel responded immediately, just two minutes later in the 39th, as a corner kick from senior Joe Anderson found the head of first-year Connor Morgenthal for a perfectly-placed redirection into the back of the net, giving the home side a 2-1 edge.

The one-goal lead held until the second half, while the second of the Saints PKs came in the 50th minute with Anderson stepping to the mark. Anderson's attempt went right down the middle as the Pride keeper dove away from the shot, doubling the Saints advantage to 3-1.

On the third penalty of the night, coming thanks to a foul committed by the Regis keeper, first-year Lucas Silvia stepped up for his shot from the dot. Similar to the attempt by Matamoros, Silvia placed his right-footed effort into the bottom left corner for a 4-1 advantage.

Anderson finished with the only three-point night for any players, ending the evening with one goal and one assists. First-year goalie Owen Silva made six saves for the Saints on Tuesday, improving to 7-2-4 this season.

The Saints have one final match on the regular season schedule, a Saturday afternoon tilt at Mitchell in GNAC play at 4:00 p.m. While Tuesday's win locks the Saints into the playoffs, the majority of teams in the conference have two matches left. Emmanuel's seeding in the upcoming postseason ranges anywhere from second to eighth, depending on the results of the remaining matches.
